Sourdough Care Guide

What is the best way to store sourdough bread?

The crust on a loaf of sourdough naturally will keep it fresh for 2-3 days uncovered if you have not cut into it. Once cut, place it exposed-side down on a cutting board. You may place a dish towel over it to prevent it from drying out. While it is not recommended, you can place sliced sourdough bread in a ziploc bag on the counter, but the texture of the bread may change and become soggy.

Can I freeze sourdough bread?

Yes! It is a great idea to freeze sourdough if you do not think you will finish it in 2-3 days. With both options, it is best to freeze it on the day it was baked.

  • If you want to have slices of fresh sourdough ready to go: slice your loaf, place in a ziploc and seal tightly to remove air before freezing. Take slices out as needed and toast to thaw.

  • To freeze an entire loaf for future use: wrap tightly in plastic wrap and then aluminum foil before freezing. When ready to eat, soak the entire loaf under running water for 5-10 seconds (trust me!), place on a tray in a 400 degree oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. If it starts to brown too quickly, tent with aluminum foil.

Bread go stale anyway?

Give it new life by making croutons! Cube your bread, mix with with a generous amount of olive oil and/or butter, salt & pepper, and seasonings of your choice. Place on a tray and bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes, tossing once or twice.
